Everyone loves barbecue, whether traditionally prepared or otherwise. You could even go so far as to say that barbecue sauce is the official condiment of summer! Yet, old-school barbecue sauce can get a little boring after a while. When you’d like to try a new flavor profile, whip up one of these gourmet-inspired options. One recipe uses the 23 flavors of Dr. Pepper soda to liven up a standard barbecue sauce, while the other adds a bit of berry-licious flavor to chicken and pork. Yum!
Dr. Pepper BBQ Sauce
• 1 can (12 ounces) Dr. Pepper
• 1 cup crushed tomatoes
• 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
• 2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
• 1 tablespoon orange juice
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
• 1 garlic clove, minced
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• In a small saucepan, combine all ingredients; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 30-35 minutes or until slightly thickened, stirring occasionally. Refrigerate leftovers.
Berry BBQ Sauce
• 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
• 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1/4 cup water
• 1 to 2 cups barbecue sauce
• In a large saucepan, combine berries, sugar, and water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 15-20 minutes or until thickened, stirring occasionally.
• Stir in the desired amount of barbecue sauce; cook 10-15 minutes longer or until thickened. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
